Frequently Asked Questions
What is Voltopia?
Voltopia is a Progressive Web Application that helps you monitor real-time electricity prices from Nord Pool. It provides price alerts, historical data visualization, and push notifications to help you optimize your energy consumption.
Which regions are supported?
Voltopia supports all Nord Pool regions including:
- Baltic countries: Latvia (LV), Lithuania (LT), Estonia (EE)
- Nordic countries: Sweden (SE1-SE4), Norway (NO1-NO5), Finland (FI), Denmark (DK1, DK2)
How often are prices updated?
Electricity prices are published daily by Nord Pool, typically around 12:00-13:00 CET. Today's prices are available immediately, and tomorrow's prices are published in the afternoon. Voltopia automatically fetches the latest prices multiple times per day.
What time interval does the data represent?
Nord Pool provides electricity prices in 15-minute intervals (Market Time Units). Voltopia can display this data as either 15-minute intervals or hourly averages, depending on your preference. The hourly view calculates the average of the four 15-minute periods within each hour.
Why do the hours shown differ from my local time?
Voltopia displays all times in your local timezone with automatic daylight saving time adjustments. If you're seeing different times, ensure your device's timezone is set correctly. The app uses the IANA timezone database to accurately convert UTC timestamps to your region's local time.
How do price alerts work?
You can set custom price thresholds to receive notifications when electricity prices fall below (low alert) or rise above (high alert) your specified values. Enable push notifications in your browser to receive these alerts even when the app is closed.
How do I enable push notifications?
To enable push notifications:
- Click the "Enable Notifications" button on the dashboard
- Allow notifications when your browser prompts you
- Set your price alert thresholds in the settings
- You'll receive notifications when prices match your criteria
What is the difference between prices with and without VAT?
Prices from Nord Pool are shown without VAT by default. You can toggle the VAT option in settings to view prices with VAT included (typically 21% in Latvia and varying rates in other countries). This helps you see the actual price you'll pay as a consumer.
Can I use Voltopia offline?
Yes! Voltopia is a Progressive Web App (PWA) with offline capabilities. Once you've loaded the app, it will cache the interface and recent price data, allowing you to view previously loaded information even without an internet connection. However, you'll need internet to fetch new price updates.
How do I install Voltopia on my device?
As a PWA, Voltopia can be installed on your device:
- Desktop: Click the install icon in your browser's address bar or use the browser menu
- Mobile (iOS): Open in Safari, tap Share, then "Add to Home Screen"
- Mobile (Android): Open in Chrome, tap the menu, then "Install App" or "Add to Home Screen"
Is my data private and secure?
Yes. Your settings and preferences are stored locally on your device. We only store push notification subscriptions in our secure database, and these cannot be used to identify you personally. We do not track your usage or collect analytics. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Are the prices in EUR/MWh or EUR/kWh?
Nord Pool publishes prices in EUR/MWh (megawatt-hours). For easier understanding, Voltopia can display prices in both EUR/MWh and EUR/kWh. Note that 1 MWh = 1000 kWh, so to convert: EUR/kWh = EUR/MWh ÷ 1000.
Why are there sometimes no prices for tomorrow?
Tomorrow's prices are published by Nord Pool around 12:00-13:00 CET each day. Before that time, only today's prices are available. The app will automatically display tomorrow's prices once they're published.
